Effective immediately, LG will cease providing wireless firmware updates and related services (FOTA, app services, and LG Bridge) for all its mobile phones. This marks the end of LG's presence in the global market after a 19-year journey.
Once among the top three smartphone brands globally, LG Electronics shipped an impressive 100 million units in 2008 alone; their iconic Chocolate phone KG800 (also known as KG90) was immensely popular worldwide. However, starting from 2015, LG's mobile business experienced consecutive years of losses, accumulating a staggering loss of KRW 5 trillion (approximately RMB 293.6 billion) by the end of 2020 and holding only a 1.5% market share.
Faced with intense competition and persistent financial setbacks, LG Electronics decided to shift its strategic focus towards other growth areas such as electric vehicle components, smart home appliances, artificial intelligence, and robotics. Currently, the company's primary products include refrigerators, washing machines, OLED TVs, headphones, digital devices, and automotive parts like traction motors and lighting systems. According to their 2024 financial report, LG Electronics achieved record-high consolidated revenue and operating profit.
In the television market, LG leads with its OLED technology, shipping over 3.18 million units in 2024, capturing more than 52.4% of the global market share; furthermore, LG Newnergy ranks third globally in the power battery sector, holding a 21.7% market share.
