The development of a foldable iPhone by Apple is progressing rapidly and may debut as early as 2026.
According to reports from South Korean media, Apple has chosen Samsung Display as the exclusive supplier for OLED panels in its upcoming foldable device, prioritizing screen quality over diversifying suppliers.
BusinessKorea reported that the new phone could be unveiled late in 2026 with a 5.5-inch exterior display and an unfolded size of 7.8 inches. Samsung Display recently finalized the supply agreement and is expected to begin deliveries by year's end or early next year.
While Apple typically diversifies its suppliers to mitigate risk and negotiate favorable pricing, it will rely solely on Samsung for foldable iPhone screens. Industry insiders attribute this decision to Samsung鈥檚 six years of experience since launching the Galaxy Fold in 2019鈥攅xperience that has given them a significant technological advantage over competitors like LG Display and BOE.
The exact shipment volume for Apple's first foldable phone remains uncertain; however, some reports suggest an annual production target as high as fifteen million units, compared to earlier expectations of nine million per year.
Analysts have attributed Apple鈥檚 previous hesitation in entering the folding smartphone market鈥攚hich began with Samsung鈥檚 launch of the Galaxy Fold and subsequent releases from other brands in 2019鈥攑rimarily to technical challenges such as thickness issues and screen creases that Apple has been unwilling to compromise on.
