Apple Dominates Japanese Smartphone Market, Overtaking Sharp for Android Leadership

Thanks to the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple has captured nearly 70 percent of Japan鈥檚 smartphone market share鈥攊ts highest level since April 2022. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics surpassed Sharp and became the top-selling Android brand in Japan for the first time in three years.
According to a report released by IT research firm BCN on March 11 (compiled from sales data of home appliance stores and online retailers), smartphone sales volume in Japan surged 29.7% year-over-year, reaching its highest level over the past three years.
In model-specific rankings for March, Apple's iPhone models accounted for half of the top ten best-selling smartphones; the iPhone 15 was ranked as the most popular phone that month, followed closely by the iPhone 16. The newly launched iPhone 16e saw a significant jump in ranking from thirty-third place in February to third position.
The Google Pixel 8a secured fourth place on the sales chart while Samsung鈥檚 Galaxy A25 5G鈥攔eleased at the end of February鈥攃limbed significantly from forty-second spot last month, entering the top five. This marks a rare occurrence for any Samsung product appearing on this list in nearly one year.
