DHgate Gains U.S. Traction: Examining Authenticity Claims
Image source: Visual China. DHgate (敦煌网), a cross-border e-commerce platform, has experienced rapid growth in the U.S. market. On April 15th, it quickly ascended to second place on Apple's free app chart for applications in America—just behind ChatGPT—generating significant attention. This surge sparked enthusiasm in secondary markets; stocks of companies related to cross-border e-commerce, including Chuanyuan and Santai, reached their daily upper limits during afternoon trading sessions.

Founded in 2004 as China's first B2B online transaction platform for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), DHgate now connects over two million registered suppliers with more than thirty-six million buyers worldwide across 223 countries. The company has established a network of one hundred logistics routes and ten overseas warehouses, offering products in categories such as fashion, electronics, home furnishings, and auto parts through its official website.

DHgate’s recent surge is partly attributed to the efforts of key opinion leaders (KOLs) who have leveraged consumer concerns regarding increased tariffs under Trump's administration. However, this rapid rise also presents challenges for DHgate. Numerous TikTok videos claim that luxury goods are manufactured in China at a lower cost and sold through platforms like DHgate.

Doubts persist concerning the authenticity of these claims about "factory original goods." A cross-border e-commerce seller told Blue Whale News: “It’s not easy to readily believe what's stated in those videos; obtaining factory direct products is difficult. We sign confidentiality agreements that prevent our merchandise from entering the market freely.”

According to Fang Tong (a pseudonym), who has been selling counterfeit luxury goods on DHgate since early 2024, “direct supply from factories” is frequently employed as a marketing tactic by counterfeit sellers.

DHgate’s official account reported an increase of over eight hundred percent in April download volume compared with the previous month. However, the company faces challenges balancing B-to-B and C-to-C demands while addressing potential legal issues related to counterfeit products.
