Interestingly, Sam Altman (OpenAI’s founder) expressed his urgent need for assistance by posting on X: "If anyone owns 100,000 GPUs, please contact us." He further explained that they are working hard but facing capacity challenges. As a result, the release of OpenAI's new version might be delayed and some features could experience outages or slower service.
Altman stated in an April Fool’s Day post: "We're moving as fast we can to really get stuff humming; if anyone has GPU capacity in 100k chunks that we can get ASAP, please call!" It remains unclear whether this is a joke for the holiday or genuine need due to its timing.
According to SimilarWeb data, ChatGPT's average weekly active user count recently surpassed one billion users. Altman noted on X earlier: "We gained 1 million new users in just an hour," highlighting how much faster growth has become compared with when it took five days for the platform to reach a similar milestone two years ago.
SensorTower data shows that ChatGPT's weekly active user count, app store subscription revenue and downloads all reached record highs last week due to OpenAI’s GPT-4 update which enhanced AI image generation capabilities. However, as popularity of this new tool surged, ChatGPT experienced several technical issues over the past week.
