Redmi's New Phone Sparks Debate: Are Small-Screen Performance Phones a "Pseudo-Need"?

Last night, Redmi held a product launch event to unveil the highly anticipated Redmi Turbo 4 Pro. As Xiaomi’s first major release following its 15th anniversary, this phone is positioned as a near-flagship model, combining aesthetics and performance with a focus on cost-effectiveness. Here’s an overview of the new device.

The design emphasizes a premium aesthetic, moving away from the previous series’ association with budget devices. The Turbo 4 Pro features aviation-grade aluminum alloy frames with a bend resistance of up to 70kg – a figure verified through testing involving General Manager Wang Teng. The rear cover offers AG frosted glass and soft-mist glass options, complemented by large, rounded corners.

In terms of performance, the Turbo 4 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 8s Extreme Edition processor, paired with LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.0 flash storage, delivering performance comparable to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. A dual-loop 3D ice cooling system, enhanced by the Maniac Engine 4.0, further optimizes performance. The AnTuTu score exceeds 2.4 million points, ranking second among Snapdragon mobile SoCs, trailing only the Snapdragon 8 Ultra Edition.

The display configuration includes a 6.83-inch 15K resolution LTPS direct screen utilizing Huaxian Optoelectronics M9 as the luminescent material. This screen supports 3840Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and quasi-DC dimming, along with an optical short-range fingerprint recognition solution.

The choice of a 6.83-inch screen represents a deliberate departure from the current trend toward smaller displays among competitors. While seemingly unexpected, this larger screen offers distinct advantages for gaming and media consumption.

Explaining the design decision, Xiaomi China Marketing Director Wang Teng stated, "While many competitors are following trends with smaller screens, we’re creating a flagship large-screen phone that delivers exceptional value." He further added that creating high-performance small screens presents unrealistic demands.

Wang Teng elaborated that larger internal space is generally necessary for effective heat dissipation and the layout of powerful components, which is challenging to achieve in smaller devices. Furthermore, battery capacity is often limited in small-screen phones, hindering sustained performance.

In contrast, the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro boasts a substantial 7550mAh battery – the largest in Xiaomi’s lineup – along with 22.5W reverse charging capabilities. This positions the phone not only within the mid-range market but also effectively encroaches on power bank functionality.

Ultimately, the desire for more power and extended battery life in smartphones is universal.
