On March 30th, World Bipolar Day, JD Internet Hospital's Mental Health Center partnered with top medical institutions across China and renowned experts to launch awareness campaigns and free consultation services for bipolar disorder. The aim is to enhance public understanding of the condition and promote early identification and scientific treatment.
Bipolar Disorder refers to 'extreme mood swings,' characterized by rapid shifts between manic, hypomanic, and depressive states. Due to its complex symptoms, it often leads to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis.
This year's World Bipolar Day saw JD Internet Hospital collaborating with doctors from the top ten hospitals specializing in bipolar disorder across China including Peking University Sixth Hospital, Shanghai Mental Health Center, Central South University Xiangya Second Hospital and Guangzhou Medical University Affiliated Brain Science Hospital. They provided online consultation services accessible by searching 'JD Healthy Psychology' on the JD App.
To further raise public awareness about this condition, a live-streamed expert session titled “Today’s Strength for Tomorrow's Hope” was organized in collaboration with Shanghai Clinical Center of Mental Health Diseases. Led by Chen Jun from Peking University Sixth Hospital and other renowned experts, it aimed to reduce misunderstandings and stigma surrounding bipolar disorder.
During the educational broadcast on March 30th, Dr. Chen emphasized that prolonged mood instability is a key indicator for early diagnosis and continuous treatment; seeking professional help immediately upon suspicion of having bipolar disorder can prevent self-diagnosis or delayed treatment. Sun Ping from Qingdao Mental Health Center highlighted the importance of timely intervention to stabilize manic-depressive episodes.
The experts agreed on the need for precise treatments, understanding, support, and acceptance in managing this condition effectively.
For family members and friends supporting individuals with bipolar disorder, Dr. Chen advised prioritizing communication and observation while respecting their needs at different times. Jiao Zhi'an from Shandong Provincial Hospital under Shandong First Medical University stressed the importance of dual prescriptions: scientific intervention to stabilize brain activity alongside understanding and acceptance.
As Ningbo Kangning Hospital's Xu Yongming put it, 'Understanding bipolar disorder means embracing a colorful mind; recognizing its existence allows us all to share in sunny days.' The public should reduce discrimination against those with bipolar disorder by acknowledging normal emotional fluctuations as part of human nature while providing necessary support.
This series of awareness activities not only increased understanding but also provided professional and efficient consultation services for patients.
In the future, JD Internet Hospital's Mental Health Center will continue its efforts to deepen mental health care through collaboration with leading medical institutions, research institutes, social organizations among others. This aims at offering more users effective solutions while contributing towards a healthier societal environment.
