Musk's Shift, Government Efficiency Overhaul, and Cabinet Power Dynamics
According to a report by Xiaoda, a special correspondent for the Global Times, American media outlets have revealed plans for significant changes within the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) following Elon Musk鈥檚 announcement that he will be returning to Tesla. Reuters reported on April 24th that tensions within the White House have been rising since Musk assumed leadership of DOGE, leading to increased friction between Musk and cabinet members such as Secretary of State Rubio and Transportation Secretary Duffey. Recently, a notably heated argument between Musk and Treasury Secretary Bezent was overheard by visiting Italian Prime Minister Meloni and other officials.

Since last year, Musk鈥檚 cost-cutting measures have triggered protests against Tesla vehicles worldwide. In April 2023, Musk indicated his intention to lessen his involvement with DOGE and return to business. Under his leadership, DOGE aggressively reduced spending and staff, diminishing the department's autonomy in budgeting and personnel management, which caused considerable dissatisfaction among many cabinet ministers who favored targeted reductions over sweeping cuts. Insiders anticipate that cabinet members will regain operational control of their departments upon Musk鈥檚 departure. Furthermore, younger technical workers, hired by DOGE and lacking governance experience, may face increased scrutiny, potentially diminishing their influence within the government.

The White House maintains that Musk鈥檚 departure will not alter the department鈥檚 objectives or impact its operations. However, numerous experts believe that some reforms will persist due to signed executive orders. Nick Bedner, a professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, likened DOGE鈥檚 reforms to a train departing a station, suggesting they are difficult to halt once in motion. Tom Schatz, of the non-profit 'Citizens Against Government Waste,' who supports the reforms, contends that implementing changes will be facilitated if Musk steps away from public attention.
