Starting today, ChatGPT introduces a new "memory" feature that references past conversations to provide personalized responses based on user preferences and interests. This enhancement is designed to be beneficial for tasks such as writing, seeking advice, and learning.
For users who have already enabled the “referencing stored memory” function, it will now default on, creating more aligned conversational experiences. New dialogues naturally build upon what ChatGPT has learned about each individual, enhancing interaction fluency and personalization.
"We’ve significantly improved ChatGPT's memory feature—it can now reference all your past conversations," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X (April 10, 2025). "I think this is a surprisingly great feature that points to something we're excited about: AI systems getting to know you over the course of your life and becoming extremely useful and personalized."
The new memory function will initially be available for ChatGPT Pro/Plus subscribers but not in the European Economic Area, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein due to additional compliance requirements. OpenAI assures users that these regions are expected to receive this feature eventually.
Professor Ethan Mollick from Wharton School of Business commented: "I completely understand the benefits of long-term memory for AI based on my own tests; many people will like it." However, he also expressed concerns about work-related large language models incorporating personal details or subtly altering responses due to past interactions. OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy raised a question regarding whether GPT might form negative impressions from previous queries.
Acknowledging user privacy considerations, ChatGPT allows users control over what information is remembered and provides the option to opt out of referencing stored memories at any time.
