The last time the US military held an open competition for its main fighter jet was in the Joint Strike Fighter program. In 2001, Lockheed Martin's X-35 defeated Boeing’s X-32 and became a dominant player in the fifth-generation fighter market.
Due to the design of the intake on the X-32, it is often referred to as 'grinning mouth' by netizens, making its air inlet one of the most popular internet memes over many years.
After Trump announced that Boeing's F-47 had won the NGAD competition, Tyler Rogoway posted a meme where 24-year-old loser X-32 tells victorious and proud F-47: 'Rise up to take revenge for me! My son!' This expresses how many netizens felt about Boeing finally winning the main fighter jet program.
And this humorous internet meme was quickly turned into t-shirts by businessmen. Yesterday, Rogoway said that his website's partner had already developed a T-Shirt based on this meme so more people could share in X-32’s inner world.
