Trump Suggests US Resources Could Bring iPhone Manufacturing Home

President Donald Trump's tariffs, reaching up to 104%, on goods from China are scheduled to take effect at noon today in Taiwan time. This action is expected to significantly impact Apple and its supply chain. Prior to this announcement, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the president remains confident about relocating iPhone manufacturing back to America.
When questioned by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman regarding the types of jobs Trump anticipates these tariffs will create in the U.S., Leavitt responded, "The President wants more manufacturing jobs here. He also cares deeply about advanced technology fields like AI and other rapidly developing frontiers where he believes we need leadership."
Haberman further inquired whether Trump believed such technologies could be produced domestically; to which Leavitt replied, “He is convinced the U.S. has the workforce, talent, and resources necessary for this. As you know, Apple has invested $50 billion in America.”
Leavitt’s reference was to a plan announced by Apple earlier this year: an investment of over $50 billion within four years in the United States; however, it does not include plans for domestic iPhone assembly.
Apple CEO Tim Cook previously addressed these concerns. In a 2015 interview on '60 Minutes,' he noted that China has made substantial investments in manufacturing but lacks skilled technicians compared to America.
