UAE Security Chief in U.S., Aims for Expanded NVIDIA Chip Access
Reuters, citing a report from Bloomberg News on October 13th, reported that a senior United Arab Emirates (UAE) official plans to visit Washington D.C. The purpose of the trip is to facilitate easier access to American technology and discuss potential investments in the U.S.

According to Bloomberg’s reporting, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan—National Security Advisor for the UAE and brother of its President—is scheduled to meet with officials from various U.S. departments next week, including Howard Lutnick (Commerce Department), Scott Bessent (Treasury Secretary), and Mike Waltz (National Security Advisor). It remains unclear whether President Trump will participate in these meetings.

The UAE’s primary objective is securing access to advanced chips from companies like Nvidia Corp., a key component of its strategy to become a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI) development and invest significantly in data centers for AI model training. However, earlier this year the U.S. government implemented stricter export restrictions on certain types of AI chips—including those manufactured by Nvidia—to prevent China from accessing advanced technology.

These regulations largely exempt countries such as Japan, Britain, South Korea, and The Netherlands while imposing partial limitations on nations including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. Neither the U.S. Department of Commerce nor Abu Dhabi Media Office responded to Reuters’ requests for comment; a spokesperson at Nvidia also declined to provide a statement.

An oil-rich producer seeking to bolster its advanced technology sector, the UAE faces concerns from Washington regarding its close ties with China. Bloomberg reports that the Trump administration initiated Tahnoon's visit request.
