AI-Driven Voice Alteration at Game Studio Sparks Controversy and Layoffs
Serene Questworks, an independent game studio, faces accusations of using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to alter voice actors' recordings. This practice has prompted legal action from two voice actors who expressed dissatisfaction with their treatment. The controversy arose during preparations for the upcoming adventure game 'Castle of Secrets,' where original voice actors were reportedly fired and AI is suspected of being used to assign one actor’s voice across multiple characters.

Voice actress Mika Nerida detailed her experience on X (formerly Twitter), stating that she was initially selected as a character's voice in “Castle of Secrets.” However, after discovering Serene Questworks utilized an AI tool to simulate various voices based on her recordings, both she and other actors were subsequently fired. Despite voicing concerns, Ms. Nerida claims developers prevented her from leaving comments on Steam.

This incident highlights the growing tensions between generative AI’s increasing use in game development and traditional methods that rely on human talent. According to reports by Game Developer magazine, Steam now mandates that developers disclose their usage of AI when submitting games for review; failure to do so may result in removal from sale. While the 'Castle of Secrets' page on Steam notes its utilization of “some generated voice lines,” this disclosure has not satisfied the affected actors.

The controversy underscores a broader debate regarding balancing technological innovation with respect and fair treatment towards creators within game development.
