Following the launch of satellite communication features on the iPhone 14 series, Apple is expanding its support for telecom carrier-based satellite services. Currently, users in Japan with au and those in New Zealand with One NZ can access these service providers’ satellite connection offerings on compatible iPhones.

Both au and One NZ have partnered with SpaceX to provide Starlink Direct as an alternative option alongside the emergency messaging feature built into Apple's iPhone 14 series. This approach mirrors T-Mobile USA’s integration, offering a supplementary solution for areas where traditional mobile signals are limited due to geographical constraints in Japan and New Zealand.

For au users, Starlink Direct provides coverage across all regions of Japan lacking cellular towers, enabling connectivity even from remote locations at no additional charge. Through this service, users can send messages, receive earthquake alerts, and share their location with loved ones. In New Zealand, One NZ subscribers have access to nationwide messaging via Starlink Direct as part of eligible mobile plans.

Starlink Direct becomes available when a cellular signal is unavailable but requires a clear view of the sky for optimal performance; while open spaces are beneficial for connection quality, users do not need to point their devices directly at the sky—a requirement with Apple’s built-in satellite service provided in collaboration with Globalstar.
