Xinhua News Agency, October 15 - On the occasion of China's first atomic bomb explosion on October 16th during its 60th anniversary, people are visiting memorials in Atomic City (China’s First Nuclear Weapons Research Base) to trace back to the 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' spirit inscribed into New China's history and feel the immense power contained within the Chinese Communist Party members’ spiritual spectrum.
In Golmud Grassland at 3200 meters above sea level stands a memorial park of Atomic City. Inside its steel structure theme corridor named ‘596’, statues of 23 recipients of the Medal for Merit in 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' and an engraved wall with names of over 31,000 base workers are lined up on both sides.
Sixty years ago, China declared to the world that it had independently mastered atomic bomb technology. Today, this spirit is being carried forward by a new generation who understand more deeply how arduous was the journey for the Chinese nation from standing up, getting rich and becoming strong.
In those early days of New China's establishment, researchers like Qian Xuesen ('Living to Serve People') and Wang Ganchang ('I Will Devote My Life to Our Country'), raised banners of patriotism. They linked their personal aspirations with the rejuvenation of the nation, transforming patriotic feelings into concrete actions for national strength.
The high-altitude Golmud Grassland was home not only to these researchers but also to thousands who migrated there due to defense needs without complaint in recent years.
In recent years, over four million visitors have come since its opening at Atomic City Memorial Museum. The museum showcases China's first nuclear weapons research base history from selection in 1958 until retirement in 1995.
The spirit of 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' is not confined within this memorial park; it has been embodied across various fields such as the Jiaolong manned submersible breaking through key core technologies and Tiankun self-propelled cutter suction dredger achieving China's first application of automatic excavation technology.
In an era marked by unprecedented global changes, building a science and technology powerhouse requires inheriting and promoting this spirit to integrate patriotic sentiments into efforts for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through modernization.
The 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' spirit shines even brighter in this new age.
