General Dynamics Introduces Six-Wheeled Armored Air Defense Vehicle, Smaller than Stryker for U.S. Army's Field AD Market
Recently, General Dynamics' ground systems division unveiled a six-wheel armored vehicle based on Steyr-Daimler-Puch's Pandur II chassis. This new model aims to join the ranks of America鈥檚 army armored vehicles for air defense.

Currently in service with the US Army are 'Mobile Short-Range Air Defense' (M-SHORAD) armored vehicles, which use Stryker platforms and Leonardo DRS-developed remote weapon stations equipped with a 30mm cannon, four-cell Stinger missile launcher, two AGM-114L Hellfire missiles, and a coaxial M2 .50 caliber machine gun. Development of the M-SHORAD began in 2018; deliveries started in 2022, with production ongoing. In June 2024, it was officially named 'Stout' to honor Sergeant Mitchell Stout who received a Medal of Honor during Vietnam.

However, when announcing its fourth batch contract for M-SHORAD vehicles, the US Army indicated they were considering an even smaller version than Stryker in terms of vehicle size. This would enhance mobility and airlift capabilities for this field air defense system.
Therefore, General Dynamics Systems Company has based their new offering on Steyr-Daimler-Puch's Pandur EVO six-wheel armored vehicles from its European subsidiary, equipped with the M-SHORAD turret to meet army requirements.

The version of M-SHORAD built upon the Pandur II chassis is expected to be approximately 9071 kg (about 20,000 pounds) lighter than the Stryker variant. This will make it more flexible for US Army support in frontline field air defense operations.
