In September 2024, semiconductor giant Intel announced a two-year suspension of construction for its advanced process wafer fabrication plant, Fab 29 in Magdeburg-Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. This pause was intended to allow for further evaluation of the project. While both local government and Intel expressed continued interest at the time, recent developments indicate that the land has now reverted to agricultural use.
According to a report by DPA (Deutsche Presse-Agentur), Intel has entrusted management of Fab 29's site to the State Foundation for Cultural Landscape. The foundation subsequently selected a farmer who must adhere to specific conditions, including planting corn along the plot’s edges to prevent rodent infestation.
Previously, both Intel and local authorities in Saxony-Anhalt had announced their intention to maintain close cooperation during this suspension period, aiming to align future plans for Fab 29 with market developments. The original plan designated Fab 29 as one of Intel's most advanced wafer fabrication facilities, capable of producing chips below the 1.8 nanometer process by 2027; however, financial challenges have pushed back its expected activation date until at least 2030 and some analysts predict potential cancellation.
Intel has stated that a reassessment will occur in 2026; meanwhile, securing the previously promised €1 billion subsidy from Germany remains uncertain. (Image source: Provided by Intel)
