National Security Advisory on Safeguarding Personal Information in the Age of AI Integration
On WeChat, the official account of China's State Security Department published an article titled 'AI Integration Into Our Lives: Beware Of These Details!' It highlights that artificial intelligence technology is integrating at unprecedented speeds across all aspects of our lives. While this brings surprises and conveniences, it also exposes a series of risks which could potentially endanger national security if not properly guarded against.

- AI tools leaking sensitive data: Tools such as AI dialogue systems and text generators collect user input information, leading to personal privacy leaks; they may even infer confidential details from inputs provided by individuals with access to classified or sensitive materials. If these data are stolen by foreign intelligence agencies, it poses a risk of national security breaches.

- AI generating false information: With high-fidelity content creation capabilities, some malicious actors use this technology for fraud and spreading online rumors and harmful misinformation which can mislead the public and damage China's image and safety.

- Smart devices being attacked over networks: If hackers gain control of smart home or connected car systems through cyberattacks, they could collect data such as conversations, travel routes, geographic information around users by listening in. This poses real dangers to personal privacy, property security, and national security.

- AI phishing attacks becoming more covert and complex: With the help of advanced technology, network phishing becomes harder to detect and more deceptive; critical industries are particularly vulnerable to targeted attacks from foreign intelligence agencies using sophisticated methods.

- Personalized recommendations hiding information traps: Through analyzing user habits, personalized recommendation systems create 'echo chambers' that can influence personal beliefs. Foreign hostile forces might exploit these AI-driven recommendation mechanisms for ideological infiltration among internet users in China.

The State Security Department advises citizens and organizations to be vigilant while enjoying the conveniences brought by artificial intelligence technology:

- Do not upload sensitive information online: Citizens, especially those with access to classified materials or critical positions, should avoid inputting state secrets, commercial secrets, personal privacy data into AI tools; refrain from spreading such content over networks.

- Be cautious when forwarding networked information: Verify the reliability of AI-generated audiovisual contents before sharing them. Rely on official channels for accurate news and do not spread rumors.

- Pay attention to smart device usage safety: Regularly check access permissions granted by users in their intelligent devices, disable remote control functions if necessary; update firmware and software promptly to patch known security vulnerabilities.

- Verify suspicious emails carefully: Use email filters and antivirus programs to intercept potential threats. When receiving dubious information or links via mail, verify through official channels before clicking on them or providing personal data. Refrain from downloading attachments without trustworthiness assurance especially those sent by unknown sources; critical industry workers should be particularly cautious against targeted attacks.

In the face of opportunities and challenges brought about by AI technology advancements, we must not only leverage artificial intelligence to enhance productivity but also heighten our awareness towards its security implications in order to collectively safeguard national safety.
