According to media reports citing insiders, OpenAI is reportedly developing a social media platform resembling X (formerly Twitter). While still in its early stages, the project features an internal prototype that focuses on image generation for ChatGPT and incorporates dynamic feeds characteristic of social media platforms. CEO Sam Altman has privately sought feedback from external parties regarding this initiative.

It remains unclear whether the platform will be launched as a standalone application or integrated into ChatGPT; OpenAI’s spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment about these plans. Regardless, such an endeavor would intensify competition between Altman and Elon Musk. Notably, in 2025, after Musk proposed purchasing OpenAI for $97 billion with the intention of preventing it from becoming profit-driven, Altman promptly responded via X: “No thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74B if you want.”

Entering this market would also pit OpenAI against Meta in a competition over social media territory. Rumors suggest that Meta plans to incorporate dynamic feed elements into its upcoming AI assistant application. In February 2025, following reports about such a product from Meta, Altman responded on X: “Ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”

Social applications would provide OpenAI with unique and real-time data for model training purposes; both X and Meta already leverage user-generated content to aid in the development of their respective AI models. Musk's Grok has even merged xAI into its parent company, while Meta utilizes its extensive pool of user data to train Llama.
