Recently, American aerospace startup Rune Aero announced that wind tunnel simulations leveraging technologies from companies like NVIDIA GPUs, Physics NeMo AI, and Luminary Cloud can reduce design costs for new cargo drones by up to 80%. This represents a significant advantage for startups.
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Rune Aero is targeting the rapidly expanding mid-range freight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market with designs capable of carrying over 2700 kg and traveling more than 1000 km while reducing carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional cargo planes.
To streamline aircraft body design—a traditionally costly process in aerospace companies—Rune Aero utilizes software from Physics AI and Luminary Cloud. The latter provides Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software based on NVIDIA CUDA-X technology, integrating Nvidia Omniverse and Phisics NeMo AI technologies for real-time wind tunnel simulation results after inputting designed drone models.
According to Rune Aero, these new AI-based tools not only accelerate the design process but also reduce costs by 80% compared to traditional aerospace body designs that rely on iterative physical experiments—making them more user-friendly and cost-effective for startups.
Furthermore, this software enables Rune Aero to identify drone models with improved fuel efficiency; they claim their new cargo UAV design will consume up to 50 percent less fuel than existing drones.
