Trump Set to Enact Reciprocal Tariffs; TSMC Optimistic About a Mutually Beneficial Resolution through Dialogue
Following the announcement of auto tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump, reciprocal tariffs will be implemented on April 2nd. Today, Peter Cleveland, Vice Chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), stated that they are in ongoing communication with the Trump administration to achieve a win-win situation; he believes "dialogue is moving towards positive development."

The Hudson Institute held a discussion titled “Building Sustainable and Successful Semiconductors Ecosystem under President Trump” today, hosted by former legislator Hsu Yu-jen. Representatives from Taiwanese companies such as TSMC and MediaTek, Dutch chip equipment manufacturer ASML (ASML Holding N.V.), and Japanese company Tokyo Electron also attended.

Since taking office, Donald Trump has been imposing tariffs to encourage manufacturing backflows into America; following auto tariffs on March 23rd, he will announce reciprocal tariffs for various countries on April 2nd. When asked about the potential impact of these tariff measures on the semiconductor industry, Cleveland stated that TSMC had already raised this issue with both the White House and Department of Commerce: "We hope to achieve a win-win situation."

He added that they are in close dialogue regarding Taiwan's significant production capacity and ecosystem for semiconductors as well as its exports to America. “They have been listening,” he said, but it is still unclear what will happen on April 2nd.

TSMC recently announced plans to invest at least $10 billion more into the U.S., building three wafer fabs, two advanced packaging facilities and a research center there.
Jonathan Hoganson from ASML stated that they hope tariffs can be viewed in light of rebuilding America's industrial ecosystem: "Does it help achieve this goal or push us towards the wrong direction?" He also mentioned ongoing communication with American authorities.

Patrick Wilson, Vice President at MediaTek, responded by saying that their company supplies chips to many U.S. clients and is concerned about customer needs. “We hope for a proper tariff environment so our customers can succeed in business,” he said.
