As awareness surrounding health continues to grow, smartwatches like the Apple Watch are gaining popularity for their ability to provide fitness motivation and detailed insights into various activities. Recently, Apple announced a special recognition for users who complete all three Activity rings on April 24th—a limited edition badge for “Global Close Your Rings Day” and animated stickers available through Messages.
Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams has stated that the Apple Watch fundamentally changed how people view and engage with fitness and health. Introduced ten years ago, the initial Activity circles marked the beginning of an extensive suite of features designed to empower every user; now, users regularly share stories about how their lives have been positively impacted by the watch—from increased daily activity levels to significant improvements in overall health trajectories.
On April 24th, Apple encourages its Watch users to pursue activities they enjoy or challenge themselves and share their experiences using #CloseYourRings. Participants who complete all three Activity rings will receive a limited edition badge, ten animated stickers for Messages, and one dynamic badge. To further celebrate “Global Close Your Rings Day,” an exclusive pin inspired by the award will be available at Apple stores starting April 24th while supplies last.
The connection between fitness and health is undeniable. Recent analysis from over 140,000 participants in the Apple Heart and Movement Study revealed positive associations between completing Activity rings and sleep quality, heart health, as well as mental wellness across genders and age groups. Compared to those who rarely complete their circles, frequent completers experienced a 48% lower risk of poor-quality sleep (defined by nighttime awakenings), a 73% reduction in elevated resting heart rate—a key indicator for physical fitness and cardiac health—and a 57% decrease in high stress levels.
The Apple Heart and Movement Study is conducted in collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the American Heart Association, currently involving over two hundred thousand participants.
What are Activity Rings on an Apple Watch? The ‘Activity’ app encourages users to meet daily goals for dynamic calories burned, minutes of brisk activity completed, and hours spent standing by visually representing progress through three corresponding rings: Move, Exercise, and Stand. Users can customize their targets based on lifestyle or adjust them throughout the week; they may also pause Activity Rings as needed.
The ‘Activity’ app is just one feature among many that provide motivating insights to help users better understand fitness and health data. Other features include:
- The “Fitness” App: Grounded in science, it adheres to rigorous accuracy standards.
- Recent validation summaries detail the methodologies used for heart rate measurement, calorie estimation, and providing comprehensive fitness and cardiac health information.
Apple prioritizes user privacy within its Health app by offering transparency mechanisms and personal data control options. Fitness and health data (excluding Medical ID) are encrypted when an iPhone or iPad is locked using a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID; any synced iCloud health records will be transmitted securely and stored on Apple servers in an unreadable format if users have updated versions of watchOS, iOS, and iPadOS with default two-factor authentication enabled.
