Xiaomi Mandates 11.5-Hour Workdays, Sparks Employee Backlash
Result

Recently, a post on the social media platform Maimai alleged that Xiaomi mandates an average work time of at least 11.5 hours per day for its employees. The post further claimed that employees working fewer than eight hours are required to provide justification, and those with lower productivity risk warnings or termination. This sparked widespread discussion on platforms like Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book). Several Xiaomi employees have since confirmed these practices to reporters, though the company did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

One Shanghai-based Xiaomi employee stated that their department requires an average workday of 11.5 hours, typically from 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM. Another employee reported being warned about performance despite working an average of twelve hours daily. Furthermore, taking time off can negatively impact average work hours, requiring compensatory work time. An employee from Xiaomi鈥檚 mobile phone department revealed that these practices have been in place for over a year, recently gaining broader attention online. Employees who fail to meet the required work hours may face penalties or negatively impact their performance evaluations. Outsourced employees also stated they must work at least 11 hours daily, or risk termination.
