On the night of March 29th, three female college students driving towards Anhui province for an official examination were involved in a crash near Tongling Congyang Expressway. Their car exploded after impact, leading to their tragic demise.
The front end of the Xiaomi SU7 was severely damaged and burned inside. Family members are angry at what they believe is a battery explosion following collision that caused ignition and power failure within the vehicle, trapping three female students until death occurred.
Following this incident, there has been widespread public questioning regarding autonomous driving technology by Xiaomi as well as concerns over potential safety hazards with their vehicles. The families of those who died have expressed hope for transparency from Xiaomi about any possible issues to prevent similar tragedies.
On April 1st, Lei Jun posted on Weibo stating that the accident deeply saddened him and he extended his condolences along with sincere sympathies towards affected family members. He mentioned a special task force was immediately established by their team. On March 30th they rushed to the scene of the incident while cooperating fully with police investigations including providing vehicle data retrieval services as requested on March 31st.
Lei Jun stated that although many questions remain unanswered due to ongoing investigation, he felt compelled not to wait any longer and promised publicly: 'Regardless of what happens next, Xiaomi will never avoid responsibility. We commit ourselves continuously in cooperation with the police's investigations while keeping track of developments closely.'
He concluded by saying they would address concerns raised from public criticism through actions.
