China to Impose 34% Tariffs on U.S. Goods from April 10
Following President Donald Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs against over 180 countries on April 2nd Eastern Time, China—currently facing the highest cumulative tariff rate globally—announced today that it will impose a 34% tariff on all American imports starting at 12:01 AM on April 10th.

President Trump announced these reciprocal tariffs during US Emancipation Day celebrations. A base-rate of 10% took effect on April 5, with an additional punitive rate implemented for the top fifty countries exhibiting significant trade deficits as of April 9.

In addition to this new tariff (34%), China will also apply previously imposed duties, resulting in a total exceeding 76%, making it the highest among all nations.

The Tariff Commission under the State Council officially announced today that these measures are being implemented due to America’s unilateral imposition of reciprocal tariffs on China—a move deemed noncompliant with international trade norms and detrimental to legitimate Chinese interests; this action was characterized as a “typical act of bullying.”

Therefore, starting at 12:01 AM April 10th, all US imports will be subject to an additional tariff rate of 34% by the Chinese government. Current tax exemptions remain unchanged; however, these newly imposed tariffs are not exempted and goods shipped between 12:01 AM on April 10th and midnight May 13th, 2025, will be excluded from the new tariff.

Beijing has become the first country to respond with retaliatory measures against US imports following President Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs.
